Safety at a glance

Full safety details

Most-reported side effects

  • Nausea (very common — start low)
  • Flushing

Don't use if…

  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Pregnancy

What it is

FDA-approved (2019) cyclic heptapeptide for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women. Acts centrally on the melanocortin system rather than peripherally on vasculature like PDE-5 inhibitors.

Mechanism of action

Non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist (MC1R/MC4R) within the hypothalamus, increasing dopamine release in mesolimbic reward circuitry.

Reported benefits

  • Centrally-mediated libido and arousal increase in both men and women
  • Functional even when PDE-5 inhibitors fail

Evidence notes

Two FDA-pivotal trials in HSDD. Off-label male use is anecdotally common.
